A Hi-Tech Mcdonalds?

Over easter weekend my sister and I stopped at a McDonald’s restaurant in Romeoville, IL. When we walked in we were surprised to find this was no normal McDonald’s. Inside there were no menus glowing up overhead the cashier, instead were two large terminals with touchscreen displays and a hand sanitizer station between them.

The screen ordering was pretty intuitive. You begin by pressing Eat in or To go, then you go on to choose what you want. Your order is shown on the side of the screen like an online shopping cart and is calculated when you press finish. You can then choose to pay the usual ways including wish cash. A receipt is printed which you then present at the cashier when your number is called. I noticed the dining room was quite a bit different from usual as well as there were multiple LCD TVs on the wall playing the news and some played kids shows.

The whole idea really got me thinking, could this be the future of fast food? I asked the woman at the counter and she explained that the store was a test market store in which coroporate would us to test new ideas. While we were waiting an elderly couple approached the counter confused and asked the cashier where the menu was, she pointed at the wall where a new menu was displayed but the couple started whispering about how they weren’t sure where the menus went. It’s funny how nowadays the younger geberations have become accostemed to technology and will know what to do in a situation as such, the elderly couple never even noticed the terminals and I wonder if they would have even used them if they did. I for one hope they go with this idea, I like it.

Sorry about the quality of the photos, my 8525 doesn’t take very good ones.
