Apple Fanboy Christmas is here! That’s right Steve Jobs has just announced the new iPhone 2.0 at the World Wide Developers Conference at The Moscone Center in San Francisco. The new iPhone will include 3g network speeds, have metal buttons, a black plastic backing, it will be thinner at the edges, have flush headphone jack, feature improved audio, improved battery live which gets 5 hours talk time or 5-6 hours while browsing, and it also includes GPS. The iPhone 3g will be available in many new countries; most of South America, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Czech, Switzerland, Leigch, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Malta, Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Greece, and Turkey. 70 countries total. A new lower price was announced it will now be sold at $199 for the black 8g model and at $299 for the 16g model available in white. Available July 11.
The iPhone 2.0 software will include a ton of new updates! Including the ability to work in a corporate environment syncing with Microsoft Exchange servers, which allows corporate employees to receive their work email on their iPhones along with Outlook contacts, global address book, calenders, Cisco VPN, WPA/WPA 2 wireless security, and the ability to remote wipe the device. Along with corporate features, 2.0 will allow anyone to write iPhone software using the iPhone Software Development Kit which features a whole suite of tools which makes creating applications for iPhone incredibly easy. An iPhone simulator will also be included which runs an exact replica of the iPhone software in OS X allowing for easy testing. One of the apps that was demoed was an application from the Associated Press not only does it let you read news and watch news video right on the phone, it uses iPhone location ability to tell where you are and display local news, you can even send pictures and stories to the AP from your iPhone. Another application that was demoed that I’m really excited about is the MLB: At Bat application, it allows you to essentially watch Major League Baseball’s Gameday on your phone! If you are unfamiliar with MLB Gameday this means live baseball stats and video highlights from each game on the go. These applications will be available on the Apple Apps Store when it becomes available. Also available in the SDK will be a Push notification feature for programs such as IM, email, and chat which doesn’t use background processing that would eat up battery life, it runs over the air. The SDK will be available in September, developers will name their own price and will receive 70% of the revenue from the application. If the application is less than 10MB, it can be downloaded through the cell network. Otherwise, it requires WiFi or iTunes. The SDK store will be available in 62 countries.
Also added to iPhone 2.0 are searchable contacts, Microsoft Office document support for Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, a scientific calculator, parental controls, and world language support. iPhone 2.0 update will be available in early July as a free update to all iPhone and $9.99 for iPod touch. Announced is MobileMe which is a push function for those without an exchange server, email, contacts and calender changes even pictures get pushed to all your devices computer, iPhone, etc. All from www.me.com which includes 20g for $99.99 a year available in July, MobileMe replaces .Mac So there you have it folks I’m excited and can’t wait till July 11!
