So the dust has settled and in a few weeks we will be able to get our hands on the new 3g iPhone. This past month the internet has been shouting about the $199 price like crazy, celebrating the price drop whenever the iPhone is mentioned, but what they don’t mention is that this price is only with a 2 year contract.
I don’t currently own an iPhone, I have an old ATT 8525 that’s big, bulky, and doesn’t fit in my pocket, frankly I want to throw it against the wall. As you can imagine I am ready to take the plunge and get a new phone but there is one thing keeping me from saying for sure that I’m going to get the new iPhone on July 11, the fact that no one knows how much the phone is going to sell for if you already have a contract with ATT. The way it’s worked in the past is that, say I dropped my phone in a puddle and it died, I would have to go to ATT and buy a new one outright, but pay full price for the phone, so a $99 phone with a 2 year contract would actually be $299 as I’m just buying the phone without a contract. Now, if you are eligble for an upgrade then you can buy some phones outright at the contract price. I would have no problems if I was able to upgrade my phone, but my eligibality doesn’t come around until November. Gizmodo has noted that if you already have a first gen iPhone that you will be elgible to extend your contract for two more years and upgrade to the 3g for the same $199 price, but again no mention of a price for those who already have contracts and use different phones. At this point i’m just going to wait and see what happens, we still have a few weeks and maybe that information will surface. What do you think are you going to get the 3g iPhone on July 11?
